SELFBOOT through I2C, with pause/halt

Mr.Q Question

I am considering to build a system with a ADAU1452 working in SELFBOOT mode over I2C. Instead of having a I2C EEPROM I plan on having a MCU working as I2C slave delivering the firmware to the DSP.

My question is: Will the ADAU1452 accept any kind of halt/pause during firmware download? Either by having the slave sending a NACK when it is getting a request -OR- the slave is pulling the clock line low for a while. The two pause behaviors described is normal in I2C communication, but is the ADAU1452 able to handle this kind of pause?

Thanks

Hello Mr.Q.

The state machine that performs the Selfboot is built into the silicon. It is in firmware and it is rather simple. I think it will see a NACK as an error and try again from the start. If it fails three times it will stop trying and put the processor to sleep.

I think you have to be able to supply the data at the same speed that an EEPROM would.

So you will have the MCU connected to the Master port? Then will you switch it over to the slave port to be able to control the DSP during runtime?

By the way, you will see some pauses in the bootup program. It will load in the first 16 bytes at a slow speed and then pause to allow the PLL to lock then it will continue and run at the full speed specified in the selfboot EEPROM header.
