For the ADAU1452/1462, I cannot read the SPDIF_RX_DECODE (0xF602) register

This register always reads 0x0000. SPDIF_LOCK_DET (0xf601) is reading 0x0001. I do have a lock.
What am I doing wrong?

Update,
The digital source is the Amazon Echo Link using the Toslink output. With this device, the SPDIF_RX_DECODE register is reading 0x0000. Other digital sources show the correct values.
