We're considering adding AES/EBU reception (only) in a new design (probably ADAU1451).

The DSP supports SPDIF natively, which is very close, but disclaims AES. Why is that? If we add a proper isolation transformer and resistor, and are mindful of signal levels, will this work reliably? If not, why not?

I'd rather not spend the extra $/board space on a dedicated AES receiver if I can avoid it.

As long as you make sure the received level (after isol transformer) never exceeds the max input of the ADAU1451 it should work.

I suggest diode clamping protection.

I suggest that you add a series Cap 0.1uf between the IC RX Pin and the Isol Transformer . And put a 100k resistor to GND directly on the CHIP RX pin as well.

Strictly speaking, the Channel Status and other subcode data is formatted differently between AES and S/PDIF, So as long as you dont card or handle this it is rarely a problem.
