Hi,

I would like to process 6 channels of audio, and the ADAU1452 I own, have 4 inputs each (I have two). Can I use them simultaneously like:

-. Channel 1, 2, 3 and 4 to DSP A

-. Channel 5, 6, 7 and 8 to DSP B

In both cases I would use as input, the integrated ADC's and as output, the integrated DAC's.

Would this configuration cause timing issues between DSP A and DSP B? Is there any way to overcome that? Like make DSP A as master and DSP B as slave in clock matters? Would this timing issues be "audible"?

Just in the case there are issues, and there is no way to overcome it... how is it possible to use 8 channels with active speakers (which each of them normally have integrated DSP) without any problem?

This system is NOT used for live audio, but for reproduction only.

Thanks in advance.

The ADAU1452 supports 48 audio input and output channels, but has only 6 input ADCs and does not have any integrated DACs. As described in the datasheet, you would use a codec IC to perform the ADC/DAC conversions of your audio to/from the serial data stream formats used to interface with the DSP.

I believe you are confusing the serial data ports (of which the ADAU1452 has 4 input and 4 output) with audio channels. The SDATA ports, along with the associated BCLK and LRCLK signals, are digital audio in a format described by the configuration registers of the DSP. Each port supports multiple channels of digital audio data (2, 4, or 8 channels for all of them, with ports 0 and 1 also supporting 16-channels).

The integrated ADCs in the ADAU1452 have only 10 bits of resolution, which is likely not going to be enough for high-quality audio purposes. They are intended more as an interface through which potentiometers can be connected.

You only need a single ADAU1452 to handle 6 channels of audio, but you will be unable to do much of anything without a separate ADC, DAC, or codec to convert between the digital and analog audio signals.

Dylan,

Thank you very much for your reply. After I post this question I researched (and learned) a little on the ADAU1452 and realized what you said, that the ADAU1452 does not have integrated ADC nor DAC, and that for that it connects with eh AD1938 (or AD1933) CODEC. So my question is not correct in form, but in the end... what I wanted to do is to expand the ADC to have more channels to process, and that is made with two AD1938 connected in "daisy chain" using TDM16 (or is it TDM8?).

I already purchased 2 AD1938 CODECs and I am waiting them to arrive to test this. The idea is to get 8 inputs with 16 outputs.

I also understand the 10bit ADC from the DSP are not for high quality audio, but for interface (pots, buttons, etc.).-

Thanks again for your help! I will probably post more questions once I receive my two AD1938

Cheers.
