Installation of VisualDSP++ v5.1 failed on Windows 10.

installation of VisualDSP++ v5.1 failed on Windows 10.
Got the error message "Error registering a file with Windows."
Install using Windows 7 compatibility mode, still resulted in same error.
Any suggested solution?
According to the release notes, Windows 10 isn't supported. See this related thread: Will VisualDS++ 5.1.1.2 and Emulator run under Windows 10?
