Loading Sharc Programs in Production
Hi, I am working on a DSP audio project on Sharc, developed using the ADSP-21489 Ez-Kit. I have my program well enough along that I am now starting to look at board layouts. In the ADSP-21489 Ez-Kit the Sharc boots from an onboard 8-bit parallel flash memory in SPI slave mode, but I generally load programs from a debugger.
What is the standard method for programming flash memory in production? My project only uses a single program, so I only need to worry about making sure the Sharc boot properly.
Thanks,
Emmett

Hi Emmet,
It's a question of scale.
If you are planning builds of under 1000, you probably will use an ADI ICE-1000 and CCES. There is a programming utility that comes with the tools. You do need to make sure that the boot device is supported or you will need to modify the programming file. DON'T USE A PARALLEL FLASH!, There are many 8 pin SPI flashes available that will work. They all read the same way, but writing varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
If you have larger volumes, it probably makes sense to preprogram the flash devices. This is a service that large distributors like Arrow or Avnet can provide. You will likely still want the programmed parts on T/R. You also should plan for possible problems. Make sure you have the JTAG port exposed, so you can still reprogram if needed.
The third method is to build your product with a pretested module like our dspblok 21489. This product includes a proprietary bootloader. You program via USB without any special tools (just a computer).

Thanks for your help. Couple questions:
-When you say boot devices are you referring to the flash memory chip? I assume there is a list of chips that are tested with the ICE-1000.
-What is wrong with parallel flash memory? I was only planning on booting from parallel flash since this is the default on the Ez-Kit, and so I assumed it was the standard. If I am to use SPI, do you recommend a slave boot or a master boot?
-Is the flash memory programmed directly by the ADI ICE-1000 or through the Sharc via the JTAG port?
The dspblok 21489 seems intriguing. Does this include a built-in audio codec like the AD1939?
Thanks AlClark for the response.
Alternative solutions for mass production flash programming are available, for example those from http://www.jtag.com may meet your requirements,
or the JTAG Flash Programmer from Ronetix:

The CCES supports Command line Device programmer(CLDP) to program the loader stream into a non-volatile memory. Please note that CLDP do not work without CCES License.
