DSP kit for AUV (localization of a pinger)
Hello all.
My team is making a AUV (Autonomous underwater robot). I'm trying to use 3 hydrophones to locate a pinger. The pinger is a sinusoid at 40 khz.
I need a DSP kit suitable for this problem. It should have 3 analog inputs and enough speed to work with the signal which is sampled for 2 ms - 2s
So the sampling rate and memory must handle that. + Some code (filtering and angle calculations)
The price must not be more than 250 $
I was wondering about using
BF506F EZ-KIT Lite for the ADSP-BF50x Blackfin Family
do you think that one will handle it?
Or do you know of anyone better ?
best regards.

Hi Hendrik,
The BF506F EZ-Kit would be a very good option given your analog input and price requirements. With a 400 MHz DSP core, it should have more than enough speed to handle your filtering and angle calculation software.
When you say that you will sample a 40 KHz sinusoid for a period of 2ms - 2s, does that mean that you will have a sampling frequency of 80 KHz and that you will sample continuously for up to 2s before you perform calculations on your data? This means that you will store up to 160 K samples before you do your software processing? This will likely not work because you will run out of storage. The BF506F processor has the following data memory:
32KB of internal L1 SRAM: This is likely the memory that you would use to store incoming analog samples
4KB of scratch pad memory: This is unlikely to be used for incoming analog samples because you can't DMA directly into it. Instead, you would likley use this for the stack and some other parts of your application.
4MB of parallel FLASH memory. This is likely to be used for read-only data.
If you plan on sampling for shorter periods of time (2 ms) before you begin your software processing, then you should be perfectly fine.
Hope this helps.

Wassim
