Sampling & analysing a TV stream in near real time
Hello All,
I’m working on a final year project for college & am hoping somebody can put me in the right direction.
I’m planning to design a consumer electronic device that would sample a TV stream (via SCART in PAL format) & analyse this to detect things such as commercial/ ad breaks in near real time.
I’m completely new to the video capture area but I’ve been looking at the ADV7441A chip & then possibly passing this onto a Blackfin chip for the DSP side of the application.
I’m unsure of
Is this application possible/ realistic
What the best video format for analysis would be
How to analyse the captured video
The processing power to analyse this in near real time
I’d appreciate any input/ suggestions as to the best method of implementing the solution.
Regards,
Leo738

Many thanks for the suggestion.
Can you suggest any useful reading material/ links that I can read up on this subject?
Also can you suggest any development board that Comes with such a chip?
Thanks again,
Owen
You may want to focus on the ADV7180 or 84 instead. This is a standard definition decoder, since you are just starting out you may want to stay away from the HD applications.

I believe AVNET has a board with the ADI parts on it, at least the Blackfin and the ADV7xxx

Hello & thanks for the information.
I've ordered the book & took a look at avnet but the kit focuses on webcam input whereas I'm hoping to work with a TV stream.
Do analog have any PAL video-in daughter boards available for the BF533/537 STAMP boards?
Thanks again,
Owen
Thanks for the suggestion but I can get access to a BF533 STAMP board so can't justify the $500 for this board. I'm going to look at building a daughter board using the ADV7183A chip.
Owen
Thanks for the quick reply.
Is the ADV7180/84 pin/ register compatabile with the ADV7183A?
With regards to the PCB layout I'm planning to use the design from uClinux:

Hi Owen,
if that is your intention, I would recommend taking a look at the schematics in our EZ-KIT Design Database. Our A/V EZ-Extender Board uses the ADV7183B part, and could serve as a good reference point for beginning your design:
These files are in Mentor Graphics DX Designer format.
regards,
Craig.
Yes, as above, the ADV7183 is not recommended for new designs, and the x80 or x84 are suitable alternatives.
Craig.
I do not know about the BF533/BF537 but there is a board with a BF561 and a Decoder through AVNET
Its called
Analog Devices EZ-KIT Lite Evaluation Kit for the ADSP-BF561 Blackfin Processor
You could check here too:
If you are doing a daughter board yourself you should use the ADV7180 or 84 not the ADV7183A (its an old device)

Hi,
Unfortunately, on consulting the data sheets for the ADV7183 and ADV7184, I see that there are a lot of differences in the register set. I also noted differences even in the register addresses common to both devices, as well as the devices themselves being pin incompatible. The ADV7180 is available in either a 40-lead or 64-lead LQFP, while the ADV7183 is an 80-lead LQFP so these are obvisouly not pin or register comaptible.
regards,
Craig.
Craig,
Thanks for taking a look. I'll probably go with the ADV7184 as it supports SCART input. I'm unsure at the moment what is the best format for DSP analysis so to allow scope for changes I'm also considering the ADV7401 which outputs in many more formats.
Would you recommend this?
Owen
Owen,
the ADV7401 is a very advanced product. I would start with the ADV7184.
