Hello everyone,

I want to connect two ADAU1701, one as a master and one as slave. I've choosen i2s and tried out the project Dave suggested in this post. The loopback works great on one board. If I program another board with the same program and connect them in a master-slave setting the audio output is very poor. I also created two programs one for a sender and another for the receiver. In principle it works but there are artifacts in the audio output. Did I miss something? Any configuration details?

If anyone of you has an idea on that a hint would be very nice ;-)

Cheers, Stephan

OK, first reply from myself ;-)

I think that the two devices has to be synced with a master clock. So the next question: Would it be possible for the slave to take the BCLK as input for MCLKI and PLL mode 00 instead of 11? This would result in the same system clock. Fs will be 48 kHz.

Hello Wambi,

Yes, they both must use the same master clock. Yes, you can drive the slave from the bitclock.

I will assume you are using I2S stereo format for the digital serial ports. So at 48kHz the bitclock will be 64 x fs or 3.072MHz. So you need to setup the PLL to "00" for the 64x fs setting.

"11" is for the 512 x fs or a master clock of 24.576MHz. Is that what you are using for the master 1701?

Hi Dave,

thanks for your answer. The master clock is 24.576 MHz. I built up active PA speakers which I wanted to connect digitally via RS422/485 in a 2.1 setting. Before I can test that I have to redesign my board for the alternative clocking. But it's good to know that it should work :-)
