issue with code saving

That's how it works, there is no FLASH on board, you have to send code from a micro at power on OR you can self boot with a serial FLASH.

Yes, several customers have used Flash instead. There are a few details to choosing one that works. There are some posts on the forum but it also gives some details in the datasheet.
