Using I2S Audio Breakout as a subwoofer out (RCA) on ADAU1701 (KABD-430)
Hey guys,
I’m working on a project where I’d like to include a subwoofer out to my KABD-430. It only has a I2S digital output available. I looked online and I couldn’t find much other than the SparkFun I2S Audio Breakout - MAX98357. What I’m worried is that it will output too much power into the RCA out where the subwoofer cable would be connected.
Does anyone know if this would work? If not, any alternative?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hello LaurentT23,
The Sparkfun board is a good solution and that is sort of what you need. An I2S input to a DAC going to an amplifier. In this case the amplifier has an I2S input and it will sum to mono for you. The only thing I question here is that it is only around 3W of power into 4-ohms. Unless you are working on a very small set of speakers this will not be enough power for a subwoofer when the KABD-430 has a lot more power!
You mentioned an RCA out for the subwoofer? Does the subwoofer you are using have an RCA input? Then you would not be able to use the Sparkfun board because it is not a DAC. It is a Class-D amplifier output. You would need to use a DAC to go back to analog then feed the subwoofer.
I would consider getting two KABD-430 boards and running them as a 3-way system and using two subs. This way you only send the left channel to one board and the right channel to the other. Dayton Audio has so many other choices but the basic idea you have is correct that you can take the digital output and go to some other amplifier board. That other board has to have a digital input and I would think you would want 50 to 100W for a decent sized sub?
I guess it depends on your application..
