I'm currently working on a project for a 3-way speaker system.

I'm using a DSP ADAU1701 as an active crossover. However, I've encountered an issue: the ADAU1701 only has 4 DAC outputs, but I need 6. I know I can use an external DAC via I²S, but I'm worried about phase shifts and latency between the internal and external DACs.

Do you have any advice or suggestions?

Thank you and best regards,
Seweryn

I also think that I can use 3 stereo DACs (e.g. PCM5102A) and then the problem will be solved. What do you think about this?

Hi Seweryn,

You're right about the latency / phase shift between different DACs. While the I2S delay is small, constant, and easily compensated for, the latency of the different DACs' reconstruction filters would likely differ and be difficult to match. Since the -1701 has four stereo I2S outputs, three identical external DACs should work. I'm assuming that your -1701 and DACs are all going on one board, as taking the needed signals beyond a few inches gets tricky.

Others on this forum have more experience with I2S than I have and could be of further assistance.

Best regards,

Bob
