Cooling ADAU1452 on a 2 layer PCB
Hi everyone!
I am designing a high power class D amplifier that includes the ADAU1452 for audio signal processing. I noticed that in the datasheet that a 4 layer PCB will ground pours on all layers are recommended due to thermal mass and also signal integrity. However, I am trying to do cost cutting, and a 4 layer PCB will add significant cost per unit, given the size of the board. So if the issue is about thermal mass, should I add a exposed copper pad on the opposite side of the board, connected by vias that is soldiered to a heatsink? Or is it more effective to add a heatsink directly on-top the IC?

Hi themakers2907,
Using a 2-layer PCB with the ADAU145x series can introduce signal integrity and EMI issues, especially in high-performance designs. A 4-layer board is recommended not just for electrical performance but also to help manage thermal dissipation. The extra copper layers act as low-impedance heat paths, helping keep the DSP within safe temperature limits during operation.
Mounting a heatsink on a copper island with thermal vias might help with heat dissipation, but I'm not sure how effective it really is.
Please refer to the stack-up below, which is taken from our evaluation board and demonstrates a stable, working layout.
