Controlling DS1881 Digital Potentiometer from ADAU1463 for Analog Audio Volume (No External MCU)
Hi everyone,
I'm working on a prototype board that uses the ADAU1463 DSP, and I’m experimenting with controlling the volume of an analog-only audio path (i.e., the signal does not enter the ADAU1463).
To adjust the volume, I’m using a DS1881 digital potentiometer, controlled via I2C. I already have:
A working I2C communication between the ADAU1463 and DS1881.
A button interface connected to the multipurpose pins of the ADAU1463, which I'll use to control volume up/down.
The ability to send static I2C commands using the master Control Port IO – Runtime External Trigger block with XML configuration.
However, this method requires a separate XML file per tap value, which means I'd need 33 or 63 files depending on the DS1881 mode (33 or 64 taps), making it impractical for smooth volume control.
Additionally, this prototype doesn’t include an external microcontroller, so I’d like to control the DS1881 directly from the ADAU1463 as efficiently as possible.
My question is:
Is there a recommended or more flexible way to control the DS1881 (e.g., sending dynamic I2C data) from the ADAU1463 without needing a large set of static XML files?
More specifically:
Can the ADAU1463 dynamically send I2C data to the DS1881, perhaps through a sequence of registers or script logic?
Is there a way to update the master Control Port data from within SigmaStudio logic based on button presses?
Or is this kind of task outside the scope of what the ADAU1463 can do without a companion MCU?
Any tips, examples, or experience with similar setups would be highly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello Daares1,
I think I can figure out a hack but it will be a bit of a hack without creating a new processor(IC) to add to the toolbox list.
I found a processor that matches the address of the DS1881 so I think I can do this. It will take me a little time to work this out.
Send me a private message and a friend request. I can post the solution here once we figure it out but I may need you to test a few things first.
I do not want a bunch of posts here with experimentations.

Hi Dave,
I tried to send you a private message and a friend request, but it was not possible.
Hello Daares,
Hmmm? Really? This is strange... I have my account set to accept message from anyone. My problem is that usually people have their account set to the default which is only from friends! So I get the message but cannot respond! This is why I asked for the friend request.
I will ask the managers of the forum to check into this...
I will probably respond in the morning sometime. It is getting late here.

I found out this was because you were too new on the forum and had too few points. We have had a lot of scammers on the forum trying to send friend requests and PMs. So I had to initiate the connections.
