Can I use Sigma Studio and program my DSPs without the use of the EVAL-ADUSB2EBZ?

Hi there, I have been working with SigmaDSP devices for some time now, and always program using the EVAL-ADUSB2EBZ board when using Sigma Studio. Is it possible for me to use another mechanism (e.g. over a network, or a simple USB to SPI device) to program the SigmaDSPs? I ask because if I start building multiple boards with a SigmaDSP on board, I don't really want to have to send them our with just as many EVAL-ADUSB2EBZ's for them to be programmed, or have programs updated. If not, that's fine, I just couldn't see a solution in the Q&A's here. Thank you!

Hello Mark,

I really wish I could be of more help but this is something I have not experimented with. I will ask around to see if I can come up with more helpful info for you.

We do have a number of options for communications channels which might be helpful for you.

In the Tree Toolbox you see a number of these options.

The Aardvark is on there which might be helpful. There are several TCP/IP options but I do not know how to use these nor what they expect for comms.

We had designed in a USB connection on some of these older eval boards listed. Then we developed the USBi to save build costs on more recent eval boards. Perhaps opening up one of those schematics might be helpful?

You always could develop your own way to program them and then export the program file and load it into this processor you develop but the bad part of that is losing the ability to communicate and exchange data real-time with the DSP to debug projects. That ability is huge and tough to give up.

However, it seems you are more interested in field repairs and updates rather than program development? If you have a favorite microcontroller then you can always have one in your design that would communicate with the DSP and the EEROM and update the program in the field. It is simple to have it tri-state when you are doing your development work using a USBi.

Then there is a small entry into the Wiki help files but it is not very detailed at all.

Thanks for this response, Dave. It is helpful, and you bring up a good point, there are loads of various comm's devices listed as options within SigmaDSP, but there's no real documentation covering how to use them in detail. Would you mind asking internally at ADI if anyone has come across a method for perhaps connecting to and controlling via ethernet?!
I'll explore the microcontroller approach too... Just need a bit of time to remind myself how to use them after 20 years off the tools

Cheers,

Mark
