Hi all

One of my customers wants to use 14 GPIOs in Sigma DSP.
I recommend the ADA1463, but the customer wants to use the I/O expander (microchip - mcp23008) with ADAU1450.

This I/O expander is connected to DSP and I2C.

Is there any way to operate I/O expander using I2C communication after DSP self-booting?
(The self-booting circuit is planned to be configured as I2C.)

If possible, please tell me how to implement it in SigmaStudio.

Thank you.

Andrew,

It is not possible to use all 14 GPIO on a system that self-boots. Please see my previous answer here.

I'm somewhat confused, though, about how that relates to having the SigmaDSP self boot then communicate with a MCP23008. That is an I2C to GPIO translator, and the SigmaDSP can control that part using its master port. The SigmaDSP can self-boot from an I2C EEPROM and then communicate with other parts on the same I2C bus. That part has three possible unique I2C addresses, so the SigmsDSP could control up to 24 GPIO pins on up to 3 MCP23008's via the I2C master port.

Best regards,

Ken

Hello Andrew,

You can use the master control port to boot up and configure the I/O expander using this cell:

https://wiki.analog.com/resources/tools-software/sigmastudio/toolbox/mastercontrolport/mastercontrolportio

Then after booting up you can use this cell:

https://wiki.analog.com/resources/tools-software/sigmastudio/toolbox/mastercontrolport/i2cread

To then read from the I/O expander periodically. I have never tried to do this and I have not studied the Microchip part enough to know how often it will need to be read. I think this is possible so let us know if it worked and if you did run into problems.
