In a design an ADAU1701 is connected to a microcontroller. For changing for instance the threshold of the audio compression currently 50 byte has to load via MCU to the ADAU1701. This needs some time. Question: Ist there a way to speed up this process? Is it possible to load only a subset of the configuration? Or is there a chance to change the threshold with an external component like a poti at a special I/O?

Is there an answer about the some procedure for the ADAU1452 too?

Hi Olaf,

I believe that the safeload feature of the ADAU1701 (and 1452) is exactly what you are looking for. From the 1701 datasheet:

If you're only changing something parameter-based, such as the threshold of a compressor, or the coefficients of a filter, the Safeload will let you update that parameter with no interruption of the audio signal. Of course, you can also use I2C/SPI to selectively update the parameter, without reloading the entire program, but this runs the risk of introducing unwanted pops and clicks into the audio stream.

Let me know if this looks like it will help!

Regards,

Tyler

Hello,

If you only need to adjust the compressor's threshold level over a moderate range, you could insert a variable gain at the external sense input of your compressor as shown below. In this example, the linear gain of 2.0 lowers the threshold by 6 dB. You could quickly safeload the one parameter of this gain.

Best regards,

Bob

Hello Olaf,

I figured I would also chime in on your questions. Here is a way to control the threshold of a compressor using the AUXADC input. I am adding the stereo signals then sending it to a volume control with external input that is driving the compressor sidechain. Then the volume control is driven by the AUXADC input. Give this a try.

Then you can do things like add a high pass filter in the sidechain. You can add a parametric filter to boost the sibilance frequencies and make a de-esser.
