I want to use compressor with a trigger signal that is different from audio signal. I'm not sure how to use it, can you confirm?

-I use compressor with external detector?

-can I connect envelope generator on detector input?

If yes, then why must I choose between 'RMS' or 'peak' when using compressor with external detector (envelope calculation should be out of compressor box)? I mean, RMS or peak feature should be mentioned only when there's no external detection?

Thank you for you help.

Hello,

All the compressors have envelope computation built-in. In other words, the only difference with the external input compressors is their sense input. However, all these inputs work down to DC, so you can feed the external input with your own sidechain, rectifying or not. Set the compressor's dynamics to aid your ultimate function, or else very fast to get the internal envelope follower out of the way. For an example of this use, see Limiting "ess" sounds in speech with ADAU1701

Best regards,

Bob

HI:

If you are doing your envelope calculation, simply use the peak detector. all it will do is take the absolute value of your envelope. It will also take a few less instructions.

good luck
