Usage of wav player module on EVAL-ADAU1452
Hello all,
I have a question.
Could anybody help me understand how to use wav player module?
What I want to do is to play an audio file from the EEPROM on the board.
To do that,
#1
I need to have an appropriate wav file.
#2
I need to know how to properly store the audio file in the EEPROM.
#3
I also need to know how to play the audio file directly from the EEPROM.
Could you give me some simple instruction to accomplish that please?
Also, I have some questions in each step.
Question for #1
- Does it have to be a text file? instead of .wav file? How can I convert .wav to a text file?
Question for #2
- Flash Programmer module is the right module to store a desirable module in EEPROM?
If so, I every time fail verifying after writing somehow. The pop up window says "Verify Failed: invalid data at address 0."
(I use the module as the default settings)
Question for #3
- Can I just use the combination as described in wiki? (see below.)

Dear Mr. & Mrs. representatives,
Could you please give me any hints or tips?
I just need the right audio file to be implemented in the EEPROM and simply output it by the wav player module.
Some customers of mine and my colleagues will need the functionality of WAV player in their audio application.
So, it is a good advantage if I can demonstrate it in front of the customer.

Yuta M
Hi Yuta M,
You can write the wav file directly you don't need to convert it to a text file. You have to write the file in binary mode using flash programmer. I have updated the flash programmer wiki with more details. I have shown steps to write a wav file to EEPROM in EVAL-ADAU1452 board. please follow the link below.
Flash Programmer (ADAU145x) [Analog Devices Wiki]
I suspect you are trying to write a file which is bigger than the size of the EEPROM (131072 bytes or 128 KB). That is why verification is failing.
Once you are able to write successfully. You can create a separate schematic for wav player as shown below.
Then set the wav file configurations as below.
Please make sure 'Length 1' field matches the size of the file exactly. Then Link compile download. Making the switch on and off should trigger the playback.
I have attached an example schematic and an example wav file.
1. First open FlashProgrammer.dspproj and press config and select the Signed16_Stereo1.wav as the wav file. Then press OK.
2. Then Link compile download the 'FlashProgrammer.dspproj' schematic. Write should be successful.
3. Then open 'WavPlayer.dspproj'. Link Compile Download.
4. Toggling the switch on and off should trigger the playback.
Thanks,
Venky
Hi venkatesan,
I really really really appreciate you for the very quick and complete guidance.
I will try to do an experiment on this tomorrow and give you some feedback.
Sincerely yours,
Yuta M.
Hello Venky-san,
I have succeeded to do the wav play thanks to you.
I have further questions on this.
Question
What is the maximum data size that we can wav play?
On the eval board, a very small EEPROM(128kB) is prepared.
So, the 128kB is the max data size on the eval board. I understand this.
But in the real use case, how will it be?
Seems 8MB is the max size according to the help below.
(Wav Player [Analog Devices Wiki] )
Is this correct?
Thank you so much.
Yuta M
Hello Yuta-san,
Currently module can access only upto 8Mbits EEPROM space. That means adding all the file together it should be 8Mbits.
I will double check the information in datasheet and comeback.
Thanks,
Venky
Hello all,
Could you tell me how much is the max data size for wav play?
Below is what I found.
-ADAU1452 Datasheet p.41 says ”EEPROM total memory size could be between 4 kb and 64 Mb.”
The eval board has 128kb memory on it and it is within the range. so it has no problem.
-Wav Player [Analog Devices Wiki] says the length is 8Mb
This 8Mb is the total data size?
The wav player module can play 4 of wav files.
4 audio files total data size should be below 8Mb?
Or, each file size should be below 8Mb? and can we play 4 of 8Mb(Max 32Mb) audio file?
Which is correct?
Thank you very much
Yuta M
Hi Venky-san,
Thank you so much for your reply.
I also found a line as below on the wab player online manual (https://wiki.analog.com/resources/tools-software/sigmastudio/toolbox/mastercontrolport/wavplayer)
"Note: This module can access upto 8Mbits of EEPROM data only. So the Size of all the Wav file summed together should not be more than 8Mbits/1MBytes."
I have additional questions on this.
Technically speaking, is there any possibility for this module to be able to access bigger size of data in real use case?
If so, how much theoretically would the max size be?
Also, what if some customers want to wav play more than 4 audio files? (i.e. 10 audio files)
Best Regards,
Yuta M
Hi Venky-san,
I found a line below on the wav player page on wiki.
Note: This module can access upto 8Mbits of EEPROM data only. So the Size of all the Wav file summed together should not be more than 8Mbits/1MBytes.
I have a question.
Is it technically possible to extend the module to be able to play 24.576Mbits/3.072MBytes in future?
One of my customer wants to hold 16 audio files in an external EEPROM.
Each audio file length is 1 second.
sampling rate is 48kHz, resolution is 16bit.
48000 * (16 * 2) * 1 sec * 16 files = 24576000bits
You do not have to play all simultaneously.
you can just play one by one.
Best Regards,
Yuta M
Hi Mihara-san,
From data sheet, ADAU1452 should be able to access up to 64Mbits/8MBytes size of EEPROM. Your customers requirements should be possible theoretically.
And there should not be any issue to play up to 16 files. I will take these feedbacks and improve the module to play upto 8MBytes and 32 audio files in the future.
Thanks,
Venky
