adau1452 spi master to access peripheral hardware
We are planning our upgrade to ADAU1452 hardware from ADAU1701 hardware and would like to use the SPI Master port to offload the following functionality from our host uC to the ADAU1452:
1. Write occasionally to up to 3 SPI slave devices. Decision to write is based on the output of a decision block
2. Write periodically to a SPI slave, which could be every N audio samples, or in response to a signal on an external pin.
The data sheet says that addressing multiple SPI slave devices should be possible by configuring the MPx pins. I've looked in SigmaStudio, however, and it's not clear that there's processing blocks that would be useful for our need. I did see this thread that says Analog Devices might be releasing this functionality sometime.
Is there a way to do this on the ADAU1452?
Thanks,
John

A way to do it on the ADAU145x ? Almost certainly yes.
A way to do it on the ADAU145x, with SigmaStudio ? Right now it doesn't look like it. And since SigmaStudio doesn't allow including custom code and ADI hasn't published instruction set documentation, there's still no way to do it yourself instead of waiting for them to implement this functionality.
Or, well, it depends a bit on how much effort you're willing to invest I guess. I've previously managed to get some unavailable functionality working by using GPIO blocks in sigmastudio, and then locating the corresponding instructions in the code output and patching the address they accessed (to the hibernate register specifically; the purpose was to freeze the DSP as soon as an unreasonable output was detected, to allow us to inspect memory to investigate how it got there). If you're sufficiently determined/desperate I can give you some pointers to get started.
Yeah it's a pity really. My impression is that the ADAU145x is actually a pretty nice DSP, it's just sorely lacking documentation and a proper toolchain. Instead we basically have to make do with this.
Thanks for your response. Looks like you needed to do some clever debugging. For us, if it's not possible using the available tools, I don't think we would attempt to put it in our product.
Looks like SPI Master port control will be available soon:

We did add a lot of functionality to the master control port in the upcoming release. I am not certain if it will do what you are asking for yet but it is something to look into. The new release is due any time now. Not sure exactly when. I am also waiting for it!
