Hi,

Does Analog Devices have any plans to release an upgraded USBi that will support USB 3.0 ports? I just bought a new laptop (Dell XPS 15) which has only two USB 3.0 ports and Thunderbolt C. Feels like my laptop is already bricked because SigmaStudio simply refuses to work with my USB3.0 ports. USBi works great with my old laptop that has USB 2.0. Is there any possible interim solution out there? My laptop bios will not allow downgrading USB 3.0 to USB 2.0.

Thanks,

Hi vicks777,

Given USB 3.0's backwards compatibility, it remains a mystery why the USBi simply doesn't work well -- or at all -- with USB 3.0 ports. I've got the same problem with my Dell's 3.0 ports. However, I just found a workaround: Plug a USB hub into your 3.0 port. The one I tried is labeled, "USB 2.0 High Speed," but I don't know if this matters. Plug the USBi into the hub. With this arrangement I was able to operate my ADAU1452MINIZ board via USB 3.0 -- even running the Real-Time Display, normally a tough test for the interface.

Best regards,

Bob

Hello Bob,

Greatly appreciate your suggestion. I have tried every USB hub I could find in our office, several were 2.0, a few were 3.0 but always no luck. I ran a few USB trouble shooting utilities and I find that USBi is correctly labeled as a USB2.0 device and still it simply will not work. If I completely reset Windows with a fresh installation, USBi works fine for like the first two minutes (even real time display) and then it goes dead. Sounds like the only solution is to return my laptop and get one with a USB2.0 port. Funny thing is that my colleague has a new computer (different brand) with 3.0 ports and USBi works fine on his laptop- very annoying:).

Thanks,

Are the two laptops running the same OS?

Everything is identical, Windows 10, Same Rev. SigmaStudio and USBi.

Sorry that the USB hubs didn't work for you. Which brings us back to your original question: When will ADI make the USBi fully 3.0 compatible? Time moves on, so it's getting harder to find laptops with USB 2.0 ports (or an optical drive for that matter). BTW -- Which brand of laptop has the working ports? I'll be needing to replace Freefall (named for how many times it's been dropped) one of these days.

Bob, I can't believe it's a physical layer issue so I don't think changing the USBi would make a difference. The USBi doesn't need 3.0 data transfer speeds, probably not even 2.0 really. I have to think it's a problem with how the laptop manufacturers are coding their USB drivers. Which they could probably also screw up even if they had a physical 2.0 port.

Also if ADI made the USBi 3.0, then that would exclude a ton of legacy devices. My office PC is new and thus has a 3.0 port (which I currently have no use for), but the workshop computer is quite old and only has 2.0.

Searching around I find similar reports for many other 2.0 peripherals. One solution suggested is to update the driver for the USB Root Hub, USB 3.0 Root Hub, and USB 3.0 Host Controller.

Thanks Bob,

My colleague is out on vacation. Will let you the laptop with USB 3,0 that works with USBi. I believe it is a Lenevo Ultrabook but I will post more details. I have tried reinstalling/updating all the USB and USB hub drivers and still no luck.

HI.

I also had this problem after upgrading my Notebook to HP Z G3 with usb3 ports

After some debugging using USBTrace. It was timing out ONLY on large packet transfers.

Indicating to me that the issue is sigmastudio not necessarily USB3 ports.

To test this. I wrote my own Up-loader using the CY API, but broke up the large transfers into small chunks at a time.

And this worked fine.

Maybe the USB3 buffer size is not as large as the older USB2 and does not handle being sent large chunks like sigmastudio sends in the PROGRAM and PARAM

Thanks

Brett

Hello,

I finally bought a new Dell notebook with only USB 3.0 ports and the USBi works fine with it. So it appears to be an individual implementation issue.

hi KJBob

That maybe true.

however if SS was changed to send in smaller chunks then it does appear to me more universal for USB3 hardware implementations.

Do you think this could be amended in a future release?

Thanks

Brett

Thanks everyone for the bits of information. I will pass this along to the programming team. It is my understanding that Microsoft is no longer supplying the USB drivers and it is up to the manufacturers to do this. So it will be implementation dependent making the Windows platform have even more minefields than it already has! Your idea for have an option for adjusting the message size may be possible.

Thanks,

Dave T

Hi, any action on this situation yet? I bought a new desktop specifically to run Sigma, and it just won't stay connected; seems to be a USB problem for sure, although the new Dell 3650 has both USB3 and USB2 ports. My tale of woe is detailed here in the Sigma Studio section of EngineerZone:

USB comms fails on new Win10 computer

Really need help; this is cutting into productivity big-time.
