How to configure three SPI slave devices with the ADAU1452 master control port?

Thread Summary

The user is trying to configure multiple SPI slave devices (two TI PCM1865 ADCs and a Cirrus CS4385A DAC) using the ADAU1452 DSP's Master Control Port in SigmaStudio. The final answer confirms that SigmaStudio currently does not support multiple Master Control Port cells in a schematic, and the user is exploring a workaround using an external microcontroller to generate the required SPI signals.

Hi!

I've designed a PCB centred around the ADAU1452 DSP. There are two TI PCM1865 ADC's tied the TDM inputs and a Cirrus CS4385A DAC connected to the TDM output of the ADAU1452. The ADC's and DAC's need registers to be configured via SPI to work correctly in this application, but I can't figure out how to configure three SPI slave devices via the ADAU1452 master control port. The data sheet states that is should be possible to configure multiple devices via the SPI master control port, but it is not clear to me how to implement this with SigmaStudio.

I see that there is a Master Control Port I/O-block in SigmaStudio, but that looks like to be designed for only one slave device.

Can I just put multiple of these blocks in my design to configure multiple slave devices? That would be too easy, right? ;-)

A bit about the application:

SPI SS for the EEPROM is connected to MP0, SPI MOSI is connected to MP1, SPI SCLK is connected to MP2, SPI MISO is connected to MP3, ADC1 SPI SS is connected to MP6, ADC2 SPI SS is connected to MP7, DAC SPI SS is connected to MP13.

Hello Hank,

Sorry for the delay. I do not have a complete answer for you but I am working on getting the info. There is an old post that talks about how to setup the slave selects but there is some of this information in this post that needs to be updated. I am checking with our software team to find out what has been updated.

So have a look at this post: https://ez.analog.com/message/149690#149690

It will probably be a day or so before I can get back to you with more info.

Thanks,

Dave T

Hi Dave,

I found the link you posted as well, but it still isn't really clear to me how to setup a non-ADI device. How's it going with the software team?

Hello Hank,

It actually is that hard of a question. I am still working on it.

Hi Dave,

I really appreciate the honesty. It is unfortunate that at the moment it is not possible to really use SPI slave devices, but I'm glad to see that it is a priority for the dev team.

To make things work in the short run I thought of using the ADAU1452 just as a pass-through for the required SPI signals which will be generated by an external uC as I've got some spare pins routed out on my board but can not easily physically access the pins that are directly connected to the slave devices. I will experiment a bit with this in the next couple of weeks and report my findings.

Hello Hank,

Here is the answer I have so far. I do not like it but I have to report it. I have also tested this functionality for booting one device and could not get it to work. I have communicated with the programming team and they said they would be providing a more accurate description on how it is supposed to function. I have yet to get this info and will pass it along when I do.

Then the second thing I found out is that the functionality for having multiple Master Control Port cells in a schematic is not supported at the present time. There is a need for this functionality and several large customers have requested it so there is a priority for making this happen. I do not have a timeline to know when this may happen. I will let you know as soon as I hear more about it.

Thanks for your patience,

Dave T
