Thread Summary

The user inquired about using the ADAU145x processor for decoding Enhanced DDP, noting the program memory requirement exceeds the 32 KBytes available. The final answer confirmed that extending the program memory using an external EEPROM is not possible and suggested considering a more general-purpose DSP like the Sharc or Blackfin. The accompanying answer noted that the ADAU145x's architecture can achieve high code density, which might reduce the memory requirement, but this is implementation-dependent.

Hi,

Can i use ADAU145x processor for audio decoding? I am planning to decode Enhanced DDP decoder on Sigma DSP 300 of ADAU145x processor. The program memory required for the decoder is greater than 32 KBytes but the processor's program memory size is 32 KBytes. What to do in this kind of situation? Can i use EEPROM as extended program memory? Quick suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Ajay,

Unfortunately there is no way to extend the program memory of the ADAU1452. The program counter is only capable of addressing internal program memory addresses, so using an external memory to increase the program size is not possible. If you are implementing an enhanced decoder, then it is probably better to choose a more general-purpose DSP like the Sharc or Blackfin. SigmaDSPs are more streamlined for audio post-processing.

Hi Ajay,

While highly implementation dependent, the ADAU145x processor can achieve very high code density because of it's quad multiplier architecture and SIMD instruction set. I don't know anything about "Enhanced DDP", but generally it is not meaningful to use a program memory requirement for another processor (e.g. ARM) and assume the ADAU145X will require the same resources, it could be much less or much more.

John
