build a hex file without hardware?

I tried to compile without hardware attached and I wasn't getting a crash, so unfortunately I can't duplicate the behavior you're seeing.Is there an error message that appears when the crash happens? If so, please share it with us to aid in debugging.

You could perhaps try compiling the project with no USBi communication interface in the Hardware Configuration Tab. Just add an ADAU1772 to the project, configure the registers and signal flow as you want, and then click link-compile-download. Perhaps that will allow you to compile without hardware attached.

My sigmastudio (v3.7 build 4, rev 1037) just hangs, consumes a lot of processor, until it ultimately gets a windows "app not responding" popup. (win7). No error message from sigmastudio.

I have waited for up to 20mins for it to respond, but no luck.

I did try to remove the USBi communication interface as you suggested, but it still hangs.

You may look at this thread for the ADAU1701 where I was having a similar problem.

We were able to create a selfboot hex file, but did have to have a USBi described in the project (even if not connected) acknowledge that there was a communications error with it. Which provided a good compile. Then doing a write latest compilation would create the self boot hex file in the IC2 directory structure.

Thanks guys. I read the other thread and I've tried moving the design files to another PC with a slightly more up to date version of sigmastudio and had the same symptoms. studio just hangs on link/compile/connect and link/compile/download. I have to close the app and no compile seems to happen.

However, after reading thread 19509, I attempted to create the design from scratch, and that did work.

I did have to add the USBi to get it to compile, but it appears to compile and I can generate an E2Prom.hex.
