The user inquires about using the AD5116 digital potentiometer with buttons to control volumes on auxiliary ADC inputs. The support engineer confirms the AD5116 is suitable, noting its current limit of +/- 6 mA and the low current draw from the ADC input. The wiper should connect to the ADC port, with ends to 3.3 V and GND, and the AD5116 includes internal debounce circuitry, eliminating the need for external capacitors.

Hello everybody!

The thing is I use several pots, connected to auxiliary ADC inputs in 1701 to control various volumes etc. Pots in general are quite big, so I am thinking about using AD5116 and two buttons. Just wanted to find out, can it be done? Or there are some "hidden rocks" I should know about? Sure I would prefer analog pots if they could be as small as digital ones.

Thanks in advance!

Hi!

The AD5116 should work very well in this application. The AD5116 has a current limit of +/- 6 mA, and with a 3.3 V rail and >17.8k ohm ADC input impedance, you are sinking less than 20 uA at worst. If you were to use a digital pot in an audio circuit, you would expect distortion to go up as the current goes up; in this application I do not think that will be a problem.

I would expect that you will connect the wiper to the ADC port, and the ends of the pot to 3.3 V and GND. I would recommend that you add a small value capacitor as a debounce, depending on the required reaction time you will have to play with the value.

Please let us know how it comes out!

Coleman

Thanks heaps for the answer! I will definitely let you know, I have lfcsp - dip adapters being manufactured, after that I will buy a couple of adp5116 and then will try.

Hi SKfir and Coleman,

The AD5116 does not need ext caps as include an internal debounce circuitry.
