I have a customer asking about my board's latency and it's using an ADA1701. I've searched the forum here and also in the manual, but cannot find any real info. My customer needs incredibly low-latency as we're using this circuit in a live performance situation.

Hi,

The -1701's latency is just under 1mS, plus whatever delay your signal flow adds by design. Generally, a delay of up to 3mS is tolerable in most live sound situations (this is equivalent to about three extra feet away from a speaker with sound traveling at 1000 fps). For more specific info, please see this post:

Hi,

All of the parts in our codec and DSP product line have about the same group delay, the ADAU1772 is an exception; this part was designed specifically to have very short group delay (less than 40 uS) when using the Analog-DSP-Analog path.

Hi Coleman,

A related question: What is the latency from a -1701's TDM serial input to its TDM serial output?

Hi Bob,

I do not know off the top of my head, but I am sure that we can measure. I will set up a simple pass-through program and post the results. Hopefully in the next few days.

Coleman

Hi Coleman,

I am having issues with the ADAU1701 which I suspect is due to latency, I'm implementing an Active Noise Reduction system for a headphone with the DSP to compensate for the speaker's amplitude and phase shifts and so even a 1ms latency is causing a headache. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ADAU1772 would practically behave as an analog filter since its latency is so low at 38us? If I have to change to the ADAU1772 so late in this project, it pretty much means a redesign since the ADAU1701 and ADAU1772 are not pin compatible, is there any advise on this application you can give me please before I change anything?

Kind regards

Charles

Hi Charles,

The ADAU1772 has significantly lower latency, but it also has a very limited set of processing capabilities. It essentially has a filter engine that is capable of processing up to 31 filters per audio sample.
