Thread Summary

The user is experiencing issues with the ADAU1701 DSP where it sometimes gives no sound or loud static, or only works on the first channel during startup. The final answer suggests that the problem may have been resolved offline or through a multi-part answer, and directs users to post new questions if further assistance is needed. Accompanying answers recommend following the initialization sequence in SigmaStudio and checking the PCB layout for the 12MHz crystal oscillator and PLL, as these components are sensitive to layout issues.

I've made a board using the ADAU1701 dsp, but am having some strange problems when it starts. I'm loading it via a microcontroller, and it starts up, and does the I2C transfer just fine, but sometimes it gives no sound, or just loud static, or it will work normally, but only on the first channel.

Any thoughts what could be causing this?

Hello,

Are you following the initialization sequence matching the sequence in SigmaStudio? Please try to emulate the communication sequence as closely as possible. Here is a video explaining how to use the Capture Window to follow the download sequence:

You can also follow this tutorial to generate the microcontroller code to initialize the chip:

Hi Nickw,

After confirming the content and sequence of your I2C writes, any remaining problems may be hardware related. For example, the 12MHz crystal oscillator and PLL are sensitive to layout, as described in these docs:

Best regards,

Bob
