Decoding Left Surround and Right Surround
I have no clue on how to decode LS and RS from Stereo (Lt and Rt).
No matter what I do, the signals unique to left and right end up in center and the surround always turns out to be a mono surround.
Any hints solutions are most welcome and appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!
Can you give some more detail please? What is the signal source? Are you using any third-party algorithms or perhaps the ADI surround algorithm in your project?
Hello Brett,
Hello Brett,
The signal source is analog stereo. I am on EVAL_ADAV1701 and so cannot use ADI Surround as it is disabled for this chip.
I am trying to decode the channels my-self using the blocks from SigmaStudio library.
I could successfully decode center (no big deal there) and surround. I could also eliminate the dialogue leakage from the surround. However it is mono surround. I don't know how to get/ decode LS, RS, L or R and was looking for any hints if the solution cannot be revealed directly. Any math that I try to come up with tells me that the signals in L, R, LS and RS are going to be redundant.
Dolby Pro-Logic II can decode LS and RS from analog stereo. I was wondering if L, R, LS and RS ARE redundant and that they are made to seem unique (to that channel) by gain control alone.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi KKSL,
I have a good background in most kinds of audio signal processing, but surround decoding is something that I unfortunately do not have any knowledge about. I'm not sure about how you would go about creating this functionality on your own.
Finally I have managed to decode Left Surround and Right Surround from Analog stereo source. No dialogue leakage and no pumping effects.
I know I could have just used the ADI Surround, but from an engineering stand point, it feels very satisfying.
I want to thank the ADI team for this platform that lets us explore all such possibilities!
I'm glad to hear that you were successful.
Me too! That's quite an advancement.
