Thread Summary

The user observed that a DC source set to 5.23 reads +3dB on a single level detector, which should be 0dB. The support engineer confirmed that the level detector reads mean squared (MS) instead of RMS, causing a 1.41 times higher reading. A workaround is to use a 'Running Average' cell followed by a DSP Readback for accurate RMS readings.

Setting a DC source in format 5.23 to 1 reads max scale (+3dB) using a single level detector - shouldn't it be 0dB?

Set to 0.5 reads 0 dB and setting to 0.125 -12dB...see attached...

Hi AzEd,

Sorry for my late response. I was out of the office frequently in the past few weeks.

You are correct. The level detector appears to be reading "MS", or "mean squared", rather than RMS, or "Root Mean Squared." This means that the read-back value is about 1.41 times greater than it should be. I have reported this issue to the software team.

For now, you can use the "Running Average" cell followed by a DSP Readback to get an accurate RMS reading. That method is described here: https://ez.analog.com/message/7669#7669
