SigmaDSP compressor combo (peak+rms)
Hi,
I wonder if someone can explain for me how the combo compressor in ADAU1702/1701 works. I think I understand the fundamental mechanism but I wonder which are the threshold levels for peak and rms respectively? There is only one graph to set the compression curve!? I would expect to have two thersholds to set - one for rms and one for peak.
Hi SpeakerDude,
Here is a brief explanation from the help file:
The PeakRMS combo compressor is a dual detection path compressor. Both Peak and RMS detection are performed on the detection input signal and then a combination of the two detection methods is used for the final gain application of the compressor. Depending on the time constants, Peak or RMS can dominate the effect on either the attack or release. The idea behind this combination detection is to provide the best of both worlds between the two detection methods, allowing fast reaction to undesired peaks, while still having a natural auditory quality to audio compression.
You can find a very detailed description of this algorithm in our help file. It spans several pages and shows exactly how each control works. It also includes simulation results that show the results of the algorithm on a compressed signal.
You can access that help article by going to the Help menu in SigmaStudio and finding the Combo PeakRMS page:

Hello.
I need to use this same block, but I have some question.
I have read the help that do you told us but I think that is realy important to understand a graph that show a Input signal and the output signal and show where is the paramters that you can change in this graph.
And another point that I cant understand is what the show graph means!
That is the example that I try to do!
Now I will try to explain my aplication!
I work in a project that have a audio sensor and the guy that will use to listen a sound at determined area!
The problem is when the guy change the sensor place a strong sound hapen and it is not good for the ear!
This is a part of the sound!
please, listen the sound at 23 seconds!
This is the problem that I need to solve with this block!
I need to understand this parameter to hide this peak!
Thanks For all Help!
The company Rane does a very good job explaining how compressors work and what that Input vs Output graph means. Please take a look at their reference note here:

Here is an explanation of the different parts of the a typical dynamics processor I/O transfer graph.
Wikipedia also has a very nice article on the subject:
