i'm working on 2 channel audio which is streamed from BF561 to AD1953 using SPORT0 of black fin, and control via SPI of Black fin

i'm would like to get a details on the interfaces.i have isuues on spi write and sport configuration, what is the default mode of datain of AD1953.

what is the mode configuration for stereo data, and my sampling rate is 28Khz.

The AD1953 serial port's default setting is I2S mode; see the description of Control Register 1 on page 21 of the datasheet.

What is your master clock input? Is it either 256 or 512x your sampling rate?

hi Jerad ,

the page 21 , ctrl reg 1 bit <3:2> doesn't says anything about the por value.

also my Xtal is 24.576 MHz , which is 512x of 48 KHz,

is myxtal need to be either 512 of 256x of fs?

is there any reference to programming this audio codec and intreface to blackfin.

In my understanding, the default settings of all registers are all-zeros. This means the AD1953 will power on with the serial input ports in 24-bit I2S mode.

Yes, the MCLK input needs to be either 256x or 512x fs, as described in page 10 of the datasheet.

The default I2S mode of the serial ports is a very common audio interface standard, and the Blackfin should easily be able to be configured in a compatible setting. If you post a question on the Blackfin forums, they should be able to help you.

Out of curiosity, may I ask why you are using the AD1953? It is almost 8 years old and lacks some of the features of newer SigmaDSPs like the ADAU1761 or ADAU1701. If you are still in the process of selecting components, it might make sense to upgrade to one of these devices, which have expanded functionality at a lower cost.

Yes - Brett is correct. All of the AD1953's control registers reset to zero for all bits.

The only reason that you'd want to use the AD1953 in a new design is if you absolutely need the performance of its on-board DACs (112 dB SNR). Otherwise, other SigmaDSP codecs have more processing power, additional hardware features, can operate at voltages other than 5V (the AD1953 is limited to this voltage) and are more cost-effective for new designs. Please see the selection table on this page for a comparison of other SigmaDSP ICs.

hi brett,

i'm using stil 1953 becoz , my dsp platform was developed 5 yrs back , and we were not using audio it tilll now, now a requirement has come for audio to be used. so for my 28 khz to work , i need a xtal which is 512x of 28k . i also want to write the parameter rom and ctrl reg trough spi, but when tried its not also working.

for fs = 28 khz.

wht should the the frame sync frequency in i2s mode and bclk frequency.

when i try with my crystal which is configured to 48 khz, no audio is heard from both the channel.

is there any sample code availabe, or refernce like programmers manual availabe for this chip

First let's discuss the clock rates you need in your system:

If your audio sample rate is 28 kHz, then your master clock input frequency (on the MCLK0, MCLK1, or MCLK2 pins) must be either 28000 * 256 = 7.168 MHz or 28000 * 512 = 14.336 MHz.

The frame sync signal (connected to the LRCLK pin) should be equal to the sample rate, 28 kHz.

The bit clock signal (connected to the BCLK pin) should be 64 times the sample rate, or 64 * 28000 = 1.792 MHz.

If synchronized clocks at those frequencies are not applied to the corresponding pins, then the serial ports will not input or output data.

Now, about programming...

In order to program the device, you should use the SigmaStudio software. Send an email to sigmadsp@analog.com requesting a download key. Then you will be able to get the software from our website. SigmaStudio has a built-in help file that should get you started programming the device. You can post back here in the forum if you need further help.

hi, does sigma studio allow me to program the chip from my custom board.

i having trouble in making the chip work in i2s mode.

is there any sample code available that i can use

According to your earlier post, the AD1953 is being controlled over SPI by the BF. Is that right? In order to control the AD1953 via SigmaStudio, you'll need to use an AD1953 evaluation board. Unfortunately, AD1953 evaluation boards are no longer in production. If you have one handy, you'll need to to splice the SPI wires onto your board. Typically this would mean that you have to break the traces between the BF and the AD1953 and solder the eavl board's SPI bus wires directly to the AD1953's SPI pins (or traces).

Some of our customers have optionally used switches so they can select between USB control and a local host controller.

hi,

can sigma studio be connected to any custom boards, actually i need to configure the chip using spi, i need the spi initialisation code and data read and write codes for the chip, if the code is available please share it with me, also i need the initialisation code for sport channel, my the code i wrote is giving me lot of trouble, i find the data sheet insufficient
