Thread Summary

The user inquires about converting a standalone Sigma project (.dspproj) to a hierarchy board (.dspbrd) and retaining wire formatting. The final answer confirms there is no direct conversion method, but suggests creating a top-level 'Project' board initially to avoid reformatting issues. The accompanying answer notes that wire formatting often degrades during copy-paste operations, a known issue in recent SigmaStudio versions.

Apologies in adavance if this is a bonehead question, but I can't locate any Help info to set me straight.

Say you start a Sigma project from scratch as a standalone circuit, but later want to incorporate that circuit as a hierarchy board in another design. Is there a way to convert from a 'project' (.dspproj) to a 'board' (.dspbrd)? What I've been doing is simply copying the entire project circuit to the clipboard, and then pasting it onto a new hierarchy page in the master project it wants to be a part of. This works okay... sort of. The major pain is that the yellow interconnects (wires) lose their bearings as the circuit is copied and pasted. In particular, when the 'wires' have been routed neatly around various parts, especially using the "Insert Point" command, all that formatting disappears and the resulting rat's nest has to be re-sorted. Any ideas?

That's a very good question. There is a fair bit of information regarding hierarchy board creation/saving/loading in the "Using SigmaStudio > Hierarchy Boards" section of the help file.

It certainly would be nice to simply be able to save the top level of a project as its own .dspbrd file. However, there is no way to do this currently, so I'll make that request to the software team. I'm not sure of the fundamental reasons why, but it seems SigmaStudio does not recognize the "Main" page as a "board."

Here's a possible workaround for the time being: What I typically do when I create a new project is to create a top-level "Project" board first, before I do any other editing. The only cells that appear on the top level of the project are the input and output. All other processing blocks go inside that "Project" board (or one of its sub-boards).

Yes, I've noticed this as well. It's funny, because in my memory, this functionality worked much better in earlier revisions of SigmaStudio. It seems that it may have become 'broken' in subsequent releases since it was originally introduced. I can't do much to help this in the short term, but I will do my best to bring it to the software team's attention.
