Yes, if you supply power to the ADUSB1 board through pin 10 of the connector it will be properly powered. Pin 11 is used to supply power from the USB port to the connected board.

I'm not clear why you would need to power the USB board from an external source. You should only need to use it to interface between the target hardware and your PC. Why does it need to be powered up if it's not connected to the PC?

Hello,

In the normal use I wouldn't want to.

However, ADUSB1 has an EEPROM that can store several pre-evaluated programs.

I am guessing that the Program load key S1 is used to DUMP the program stored in the EEPROM into the SigmaDSP.

I can be away from the PC and still load the desired program into the SigmaDSP, now also connected to a micro-controller.

Just as how the ADUSB1 has a program LOAD (into the SigmaDSP) key, the microcontroller can have a program GRAB (from the SigmaDSP) key.

Then on power-up, the microcontroller will DUMP all that it has GRABbed into SigmaDSP.

One way to keep everyone but me away from the SigmaStudio screen on which I would have spent time and effort.

I am keen to use the basic DSP blocks and juggle them into whatever I can think of.

I'll need all your support in that area.

Yes, I believe that the ADUSB1 board that you have can save a program in its EEPROM and load to the SigmaDSP. However, I believe that there is a bug in the loading that only allows the board to save and load a single program; multiple designs cannot be selected with the rotary switch.

I'm not sure how you plan to grab a program from the SigmaDSP. Are you intending to do this with your own microcontroller connected to the control port? If so, it would be best for you to design your grab/dump communications with that microcontroller, rather than relying on what is on the USB board.

Note that we are not able to extensively support the ADUSB1 board. We are now supporting the USBi (EVAL-ADUSB2EBZ), which is a more robust design that we are currently shipping with all SigmaDSP evaluation boards. This new interface is more-easily supported, documented, and up-to-date. If you're intending on doing in-depth work with SigmaStudio and SigmaDSP, I would highly recommend that you get a USBi board in place of the older USB board you have now. All of the documentation for the USBi board can be found in this application note.

Hello,

Thanks for your quick replies.

Thanks also for pointing out the bug in ADUSB1. So I will let the rotary switch be in 0 position and use the EEPROM to store only one program.

Yes, you got the other one correctly. ADUSB1 will be USB powered during development using SigmaStudio and when storing program to EEPROM on the ADUSB1 from SigmaStudio.

It will be externally powered from a custom board with ADAU1701 & a microcontroller. Sorry, my earlier discription was not making things clear.

I would love to migrate to the new USBi. Just let me use the ADUSB1 to its moneys worth.

Does AD have a program to replace my ADUSB1 with USBi?

No, I'm sorry - we don't have a replacement program for the old eval boards.
