USB communication failure with SigmaStudio 4.0 and USBi Converter EVAL-ADUSB2Z
I am trying to "Link Compile Download" with SigmStudio 4.0 on my Windows 10 laptop (Lenovo T570) to communicate with the ADAU1701 on my PCB. I am using the USBi Converter EVAL-ADUSB2Z. When I execute this operation I get an error message which says "A USB communication failure has occurred". Note my Lenovo T570 only has USB 3.0 but I assume this is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 so I would not expect this to be a problem. If this is an issue please tell me what the solution is.
Thank you in advance for the help.

Hello,
This is a known issue where the USBi may have a little trouble with USB 3.0 ports, and a little trouble with Windows 10. For some reason the real trouble begins when you put these two together. It doesn't affect everyone, yet this difficulty became far more widespread with a "minor" Windows 10 update last February / March. While there's presently no sure-fire fix, many solutions offered on these boards have helped those who recommended them. Maybe one of them will work for you, so have a look here:

Personally I use SigmaStudio a lot and got so exasperated about the situation that I went and bought a used Win7 laptop with USB 2.0 ports. It cost me only $100 (at that rate, I'll never buy a brand-new laptop ever again!), and it runs the USBi splendidly. The good news is that now that Microsoft has made this issue go mainstream, AD is aware of the problem. They're taking it seriously and working toward a solution.
Best regards,
Bob
Thanks Bob, I appreciate the quick response. I will take a look at the solutions you mention and post here if I can get this solved. The interesting thing is my co-worker has a Windows 10 desktop and USB 3.0 and has had no problems.
Regards,
Rob
Hi Rob,
Yes the issue has happened to some and not others -- no doubt this will be understood better once the problem is finally solved. To help insure that your co-worker's system remains USBi-operable, please suggest that he make as few changes to his system as possible until the fix arrives -- in some cases, simply uninstalling and re-installing SigmaStudio has introduced the problem into a formerly working system.
Best regards,
Bob
Hi Rob,
I have had similar problems with various laptops, etc. The solution that I find works very well is to use a USB 2.0 hub. One that I've used before can be found on Amazon for $7.99 - Sabrent 4-port USB 2.0 hub
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-4-Port-Individual-Switches-HB-UMLS/dp/B00BWF5U0M
(and we are working on some solutions internally to hopefully have a more permanent robust solution)
regards,
Greg
Thanks Greg, I will give this a try.
Hello Greg,
Unfortunately the USB 2.0 hub did not solve the problem for me, any other ideas? Are there some other USB drivers that are known to work better that I can replace on my Lenovo laptop.
When will ADI have a fix for this issue?
Thanks,
Rob
Thank you Analog Devices! SigmaStudio 4.1, which was released today 6/6/18, seems to have solved this problem.
SigmaStudio 4.1 has solved this issue for me.
Greg - SigmaStudio 4.1 seems to have solved the problem, thanks again for your help on this.
Hi Rob,
Thank you for the tip. SigmaStudio 4.1 works well with Windows 10 & USB 3.0.
