ADAU1761 booting without microcontroller?
I have been using the ADAU1701/1401 for quite a long time now and they are absolutely awesome! But i want to try something that takes less space on my PCB, for a lower price. So i came agross the ADAU1761, which has everthing i need. However, My PCB design wont be using a Microcontroller and needs to be as simple as possible. Is there any possible way to get the ADAU1761 to boot from a Eeprom just like the ADAU1701/1401?

Directly from datasheet page 38: In I2C mode, the ADAU1761 is always a slave on the bus, meaning that it cannot initiate a data transfer.
And from the page 41: The SPI port uses a 4-wire interface, consisting of the CLATCH, CCLK, CDATA, and COUT signals, and it is always a slave port.
So, always slave, it can't be loaded from "passive" device.
Hello FXtreme,
Like VFO said, the slave port on the 1701 has the ability to change over to a master port for the purpose of booting up if it is set to do that. Then there is an internal state machine to step it through the process of selfbooting. Unfortunately, the 1761 was designed without any of that hardware on the chip. The large customer who was driving that development did not need it and the team decided to not include it. In my humble opinion this was a mistake. So there is no trickery that can be done to boot this up with an EEPROM. I had written a simple program to boot up the AD1938/AD1939 codec from a small 8-pin microcontroller to place it into TDM mode then go to sleep. But booting up a DSP would be a more difficult task. You can find the App Note about the codec on our site but like I said, it needs to be much more sophisticated to boot up the DSP.
We do have a new part that has pretty much the same capability as the 1761 but I think it is more expensive. Plus it is really small in a BGA wafer level package. So that would make your PCB more expensive. It is the ADAU1787 I am talking about. It is much lower power as well. IT does self-boot.
