Thread Summary

The user is designing a soundbar using the ADAU1701 to create 5.1 surround sound with filters. The final answer suggests potential issues with TDM8 input/output and limited MIPS at high sampling rates, recommending the ADAU1452 or ADAU1467 for more powerful processing. The accompanying answer confirms the feasibility of the design with proper clock synchronization and offers to provide examples for a simplified setup.

Hello,

I would like to realize a soundbar with SigmaDSP Processors Adau1701 as you can see in this schematic

The Adau1701 will be used to create surround up to 5.1 with filter.

But I'm new in DSP and Audio and I'm not sure that Adau1701 can do it. 1701 looks like easy to use (hardware design & software configuration) than others.

What do you think about ?

Thank you.

Hello GB,

One issue I can see right away is that there may be an issue with the serial input and output ports. So both the input from the bluetooth and the output to the other DACs needs to be TDM8. Which brings up another question, will the bluetooth put out 8 channels of TDM data? I am not aware of this capability. If it is only truly I2S then it is stereo. So is the surround data encoded? The 1701 will not be able to decode any encoded surround format. You can do simulation using HDSX but not decoding. So if you are taking in two channels of I2S data then you will certainly be able to output two channels of I2S over to the additional DACs.

Then what is the sampling rate? This processor will not have many MIPS available if it is running at 192kHz fs.

I think you may have to jump up to the ADAU1452 or the 1467 if you want more delay memory. Yes, this is more complex but it is much more powerful.

So the answer is a maybe depending on a few details. This is a low cost platform to be able to mock it up and test the design using eval boards. There are separate clock pins for the serial input and output ports but I am actually not certain if they can be different formats.

Thank you Dave for your answer.

Maybe I will simplify the schematic for my first try with DSP in Audio.

Hello GB,

This is easy to do with this processor. It is designed with this sort of application in mind. Unless you are doing a lot of filtering or other processing you will have plenty of MIPS to do this. There is a decent amount of delay as well to do some time alignment.

What a lot of people do is to use two of these and place them in or near the speakers. Then they do a mono two, three or four-way crossover. So doing a stereo crossover to develop a subwoofer output is no problem at all.

Now with this part you will need to use the master clock out of the Bluetooth to drive the 1701. The 1701 does not have any sample rate converters so the Master Clock has to be synchronous with the incoming I2S clocks or the DACs will mute.

I have some examples for you when you are ready to start on this. The examples I have ready right now are not exactly what you are doing so I will not attach one of those right now. I can modify it and send it to you later.
