Hi, I'm trying to use the ADAU1761 as DAC/ADC and interface it with a FPGA. Since I'm building my own board, can I just directly program the CODEC with the I2C port to connect the serial port data to the DAC and ADCs? Do I have to build an external usb port for the CODEC to use the sigma studio software? I think normal terminal port wouldm't work with USBi, would they...?

The USBi is needed to get communication between PC running SigmaStudio and sigmaDSP chips. Alternative ways are to export files from SigmaStudio and have a microcontroller to program the adau1761 or store the program into external EEPROM for bootload. But having the USBi makes everything much faster and easier.

Hello Griensteidl,

I will add to what op-electronics commented on.

Since it seems like you only want to use the codec features and not the DSP in the part, then you will not need SigmaStudio to develop the program. You will only need to send register writes to the part. That said, I still would give yourself the ability to connect up a USBi and directly control the codec/DSP from SigmaStudio. The graphical setup of the registers will help you to setup the signal flow and you can change it real-time to get it all working. Then you can download the register settings to things like text files or XML files. You could also download the full set of system files with C-code and headers but for only using the codec features that is a bit of overkill but you still could do it.

The USBi is only an I2C or SPI interface. I am assuming you will be using I2C to communicate with the codec? ( I just checked your post and you did say I2C) In that case all you need to connect to the USBi is the SDA and SCL and Ground. So you could build your own little adapter to get it to the 10-pin USBi connector. If you have room on the PCB then just put in the footprint and do not stuff it for your production units.

So I do suggest you give yourself the ability to use SigmaStudio. It will make your design phase a bit easier.

The one little detail is that the USBi cannot function in a multi-master environment. So when the USBi is connected, the system controller cannot be trying to talk to the codec at the same time as the USBi. So you will have to manage that one way or another.
