To control the DSP, I need to use SigmaStudio Platform. In order to do that, do i have to add additional hardware which is inside the USBi module? User guide for
EVAL-ADAU1701MINIZ ADAU1701 says that in order to program i need to connect the USBi to the control port. But in a custom design how do i connect the board to the PC without this USBi. If i can't do that, what are the additional hardware i required. Any information would be very much appreciated.

Hello dulminedirisinghe,

There are some options.

You have to either use a USBi or an Aardvark. Either way one solution is to include a 10-way header like you see on the MiniZ eval board. We used the same pinout and connector as the Aardvark. Now that is the most straightforward way to just copy the pinout of the 10-way on the eval board schematic.

On some boards I have designed for some personal stuff I did not want that big of a connector on the board and I did not want the cost. So I used a Tag-Connect system. I put on the 10-pin version and they sell a 10-way header to 10-way Tag-Connect adaptor cable so again that is easy and it is zero parts on your board. Here is their web site. We have no affiliation with these folks so there is no conflict of interest here.

Tag-Connect | Tag-Connect

The final way is if you use I2C communication protocol, then you can get away with only three wires. The SDA, the SCL and Ground. So you can do whatever custom connectors you want but you will have to adapt the USBi cable somehow.
