RobB Question

Hi,

One of our customers is looking for noise cancelling in the ADAU1401A. They tested NC on the ADAU1761, now they would like to know if the NC can be ported to the ADA1401A.

Looking at the other threads about SigmaDSP and NC, it seems that the ADAU1401A is not particularly suited. Also, they want to run at a sample rate of 48KHz.

Could you help out on this?

Thanks!
Best regards,

Rob

Hi Rob,

You are correct, the ADAU1401A is not the best chip to use for noise cancellation! If the application is a NC headphone, the latency of the chip is too high for effective noise cancelling -- around 1ms at 48kHz. For comparison, our latest ANC-focused part, the ADAU1777, has an analog-to-analog latency of 5us.

However, if the customer's application is noise cancellation in another domain (e.g. removing background noise from a phone microphone), then the ADAU1401A could still have some potential.

Regards,

Tyler

Thanks Tyler!

Actually it is about removing background noise in a handset, using a 2nd microphone. I assume you are talking about noise removal by different means? With only 1 microphone.

Additionally, looking at the ADA1777, is there an out of the box noise cancelling function available. Such as it is for the ADAU176x?

Thanks!

HI Rob:

Is this about removing background noise as in telephony conference system. This is a different noise reduction algorithm than what the 1777 can implement. For that you will need a 145x family of processors. And yes, there is an algorithm available for that.

Please comment.

Hi Miquel,

This is for a intercom system, so indeed more like a telephony conference system. The echo cancellation is not so much of an focus, but more the far field audio. The environment can be noisy.

Thanks!

Hi Tyler, Miguel,

The customer is still looking at the ADAU1777, could you help with some feedback?

I have another customer who is looking at reduction of fan noise in a industrial environment, by means of anti-noise. Is there anything available for that?

Thanks!

Best regards,

Rob

HI Rob:

I recommend the 145x or 146x, There is a noise reduction algorithm that is about to release 1Q2018. This is what's needed for intercom type of systems.

For anti-noise generation, you will need something more like the ADAU1777. Can you better describe this application? Where does the anti noise gets applied? and How isolated are the acoustics from the applied anti-noise.

Noise control is a field in itself.
