At the same clock speed is there any practical difference between these type of chips. as far as Sigmastudio goes. I.E. at 48K sample rate can the Sharc processor doing floating point, handle a bigger "DSP" circuit as compared to a The Sigmastudio chip doing double precision fixed point.

HI Richard:

It will depend on what you are trying to do and your "DSP signal flow". SigmaDSP (145x) is probably the most efficient processor for doing filtering (both IIR and FIR filtering) because doing them efficiently was an integral part of formulating it's architecture and other design decisions. But even if you are doing just filtering, it will depend on the type of filters that you have. For example, fixed point is excellent for very low frequency filters with very hi Q. (i.e 10Hz peaking filters running @ 96kHz) however traditional audio filtering applications can be easily handled with fixed point (specially doing double precision as you suggest).

If you are doing more complex signal processing that requires going from the time domain and back to the frequency domain multiple times, probably the Sharc is better for you.

You should also look into how much memory does your signal flow need (now or in the future). Most Sharc DSPs have more memory (for doing audio delays).

The truth is that, you need to go though a thorough evaluation of both since in many cases users can choose one or the other. Also, SigmaStudio have some differences between the Sharc and the SigmaDSP, those differences might influence your decision.

What's your application?

It is a multichannel audio application , with mostly crossovers (low-pass, high pass) , parametric filters, compressors and limiters. and stereo enhancement( wide-stereo).

Hi Richard

My recommendation. use one of our low cost SigmaDSP. That's what they were designed to do.
