Hello,

Although https://ez.analog.com/message/130650#130650 suggests that SigmaStudio may run on Windows 8, the wiki reports:

In addition, the EVAL-ADUSB2EBZ (USBi) can only use USB 2.x ports. Meanwhile, Microsoft rolls out Windows 10 next week, and someday USB 2.x ports may go the way of floppy drives. With my laptop showing its age, I'm wondering what best to replace it with.

Best regards,

Bob

USB 3.0 is backwards-compatible with 2.0 and 1.1 and will fit the old connectors in its port (the added 3.0 pins won't be used by 2.0 plugs).

I only have W8 on my tablet where I haven't tried SigmaStudio, but have you tried the Compatibility Troubleshooter? Worst case would involve setting up dual boot with W7. Heck, my desktop is still on XP

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your helpful answer. I had connected my first USBi to a 3.0 port and it immediately quit working. Likely it was simply defective -- and AD replaced it -- but ever since I've stayed away from 3.0 ports. Now with thanks to you, it's good to know we can use the 3.0 ports safely.

The question of newer operating systems remains, because Win7 and earlier machines are getting long in the tooth. Computers, especially laptops, don't last forever. Recently my Win7 notebook dropped four feet off a stand and surprisingly, still works -- so I repaired its broken hinge and named it Freefall, after the albino pteranodon in Dinotopia. Though I've grown attached to my trusty steed, it may not remain alive much longer.

Best regards,

Bob

USB 3.0 VBUS is still 5V. The added pins are for "superspeed" Tx/Rx, and wouldn't have been tapped by the USBi anyway.

Hi Jon,

As it turns out, apparently my USB 3.0 issue is related to something strange on my end, not the 3.0 standard itself. Yesterday I plugged a USBi into my laptop's 3.0 port, which responded with the usual "installing device driver" message. With the driver successfully installed I ran a project on my -1701 mini board, which worked until I clicked a Readback button. Then the connection crashed, and I was unable to restore it. Transferring the USBi to a 2.0 port resulted in the same "installing device driver" message, even though I've run this USBi there literally hundreds of times. Things rapidly deteriorated to "Device not recognized," etc. This nightmare finally went away upon restarting! When my similar episode happened three years ago, I had assumed that somehow the USBi had become "bricked," thus seeking a replacement. That the replacement worked "confirmed" my diagnosis -- but of course, my computer had been restarted numerous times in between. I had never bothered to ask the legendary Brett G. -- who personally saw to my USBi replacement -- if my old one in fact proved defective.

Unfortunately, Freefall has been suffering multiple issues lately, so I may need to retire him for a new laptop. [I had placed my sketch of his namesake here but later decided it's too off-topic -- now you can view it in my profile]. Freefall will get some more TLC including a clean Windows install before my final decision. Aside from the expense is a sentimental attachment to my trusty steed -- with which I've fought every one of my SigmaStudio battles from my very first post here. Sometimes a cowboy has to move on to another horse -- but such a decision is never taken lightly!
