Thread Summary

The user inquired about the feasibility of using the ADAU1761 for beamforming with a 3-microphone array (2 digital MEMS mics + 1 analog mic) in a car audio application to cancel background noise. Miguel confirmed it is feasible with a broadside array and suggested using simple delays, additions, and subtractions, cautioning against adaptive filters. The user requested documentation and a reference project for setting up a basic 2-microphone beamformer in SigmaStudio.

Hi,

I have a plan to use ADAU1761 for the beam forming with 3 mic array (2 digital MEMs Mic + 1 Analog Mic).

My position of mic would be as attached. All the mic would be facing end customer and considered Broadway array.

May I know it is feasible?

Thanks.

Hi:

Making a beamformer with the drawing you made should be possible. Is this a fixed beam that you want to create? What do you mean by Broadway?

There are only 2 positions show in the drawing and no angle or directionality shown for the analog microphone. Can you explain more your application?

Be cautious that any beamforming algorithms would be sensitive to absolute gain and gain tolerances on the microphones.

If you could share more about the application, we might be able to comment further.

Regards

Miguel

Hi Miguel,

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry for the typo on the array naming. It should be broadside array.

We are in the concept of implementing the beamforming in car audio whereby the mic(hansfree) would pick up the end user voice as well as background noise(wind noise, engine noise and etc..) and then to cancel out those noise.

You are right, it is a fixed beam but the main voice would probably from driver seat/passenger seat which is around 45 degree or around 135 degree.

Hopefully you get what I mean. Thanks so much for you great sharing and help.

HI again:

The scheme you describe should be very possible with simple delays, additions and subtractions. I would recommend that you avoid using adaptive filters for the application you describe.

Unfortunately SigmaStudio doesn't have a pre-written algorithm that would cover your needs in specific, it does include a 2 microphone fix beam former.

Please let us know your progress as this type of applications is fascinating to many.

Hi Miguel,

Good day.

I am actually new to SigmaStudio.

Do you have any document that describe on how to setup a basic beam forming (2 mic would be good enough)?

It would be best if you have any reference project file with this function.

Thanks.
