Multichannel Audio Codecs for SigmaDSP
I'm using the ADAU1451 in an upcoming design and am picking out audio codecs to use alongside it. The SigmaDSP's serial audio ports theoretically support 8 or 16 channels each, but it seems like none of Analog's codecs ever send more than two channels (L/R) on one data line. The AD1938, for example, has 8 DACs but requires 4 separate serial ports! --and I'm running out of pins.
Are there any codecs available that make use of the additional channels in the serial port so that I can push data to a codec with many DACs using only one serial port?
Thank you for your help.

Hello Tristan,
Actually, many of Analog's multichannel codecs can operate in TDM mode to save you on pins. The AD1938 can also be daisy chained to provide 16 channels per frame. The ADAU145x provides up to 48 total input/output channels in TDM mode which can reduce I2S connectivity requirements in most cases.
However, since the ADAU1452-MINIZ eval board's codec is in "standalone 48kHz" mode, it does require 2 input DSP serial ports and 4 output DSP serial ports for the 4ch in x 8 ch out configuration. You would need your host microcontroller to configure the codec to operate in TDM mode. I think it might be possible for the ADAU145x to configure the AD193x codec with the SigmaStudio "SPI master control port" startup cell, although I do not know if this has ever been tested/verified by anyone.
There is previous thread which discussed how to modify an EVAL-ADAU1452-MINIZ board's AD1938 codec to through the USBi SPI header. The topic was about changing the default sample rate, but the same approach can be used to configure TDM mode on the codec.
