GPIO trouble with EVAL-ADAU1701EBZ

While I am successful in getting the audio processing working, I am unable to access the GPIO. I can't even make an output change state or read a button.

In the Hardware Configuration, I have set the multipurpose pins to outputs, but cannot make any output change state.

I have two eval boards and they both operate identically.

Any help would be appreciated.
