Wiring up the ADAU1446
Hi. I'm hoping for a little bit of guidance. I've been playing around with the ADAU1701 quite successfully but it has some limitations the ADAU1446 would get round - I think. Snag is I have no experience with AD/DA conversion or how to glue these things together. Is it as simple as it looks? Tie the lr and bit clocks together, supply a master clock and Bob's your uncle or is there more to it than that? What's the best approach, a codec or separate ad/da convertors, and which to choose. I need two in four out at most (could probably make do with two out) and don't need any processing/filters etc., from the convertors; the 1446 can do everything I want in that respect. Of the audio parameters, the s/n ratio is probably the most important to me. Any hints tips/warnings much appreciated. tia Gordon
Hello Gordon,
I2S is a standard data format between audio ICs. As you've noticed, the interface consists of three wires - data, left/right clock, and bit clock. Basically, you can just connect the data input pin of one IC to the data output pin of the other, make sure that they're using common clocks, and voila! You'll have to determine which IC will be the clock master; the ADAU144x's serial ports can operate as either clock master or slave. Finally, the DSP and converter IC should probably also be running off of a common master clock that's synchronized with the serial ports.
Your choice of stand-alone converters or integrated codecs will depend on your design specs. Analog Devices has many high-performance converters that will meet your needs. Since you need both ADCs and DACs, it would probably be best to look at a codec to reduce the IC count and BOM in your design. You can view a selection table of ADI's codecs here.
Thanks Gerad, I like voila:) The pdf for the 1940 evaluation board has also been useful. Is there one for the 1446? I looked for it before posting the question but couldn't find one.
Cheers
Gordon
The documentation for the EVAL-ADAU1446EBZ will be posted online shortly. If you would like to get a copy of it now, please send a request to sigmadsp@analog.com.
