ADAU1701 eval board controlling ADAU1372 codec eval board
Hi there,
Just a quick one on using the eval_adau1701miniz to control the eval_adau1372 DACs.
I noticed the eval_adau1701 board only has sdata_in bclk_in and possibly no way to output MCLK. Am I looking at a dead end here, or perhaps missing something obvious?
Thanks for any assistance.

Hello wctronic,
Well, you might have to do some modifications with one of them being really difficult. This board was designed to be simple and to be very low cost. So it is not very flexible. It also was designed for primarily using the on-chip converters. For some reason the serial output data port pin was not used and worse, it was not brought out to a header or at least a test point for future use. I had this same problem last week where I needed to test the serial output port and could not use the MINIZ to do it. I happen to have one of the ADAU1401 eval boards which is the full-featured board so I had to use that board.
So in my opinion you are looking at a dead end since soldering a wire to an unused pin is not easy on this board.
The MCLK on this board comes from a crystal and there is no clock distribution buffer on this board. The board is setup to accept an external MCLK but not to provide one.
The other serial port clock pins for the output ports I think come up to switches and/or LEDs so those may be able to be used for the serial port functions with some minor modifications.
The EVAL-ADAU1401 is a lot more expensive. Perhaps one of the third party boards I have seen around might be a better and lower cost option for you. I have not studied them close enough to see what pins are or are not available and if they might have an MCLK output.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply on that query. At this point I'm going to make up a board for this.
As the ADAU1701 cannot generate an MCLK ("Using the oscillator" in datasheet) and BCLK simultaneously I gather using the ADAU1372 to generate the MCLK 24.576MHz on reset would be a possible solution.
However I'm a little uncertain if on reset this clock will be generated, in order to get the ADAU1701 going to then configure the ADAU1372. Does this sound like a workable solution?
Thanks for the help thus far.
Hello wvtronic,
Hold on, I need to back up a bit here. Are you trying to "control" the ADAU1372 from the 1701? I took your question as that you were simply wanting to transfer data between the two parts and not control the other part. There are some GPIO controls on the 1372 but I don't know how much sense it makes to use them when the same features are available in the DSP. If you are planning on having the 1701 actually write to the registers of the 1372 to configure it then that will not work. The 1701 is not capable of being a master on the comms bus (SPI or I2C). You would have to move up to the ADAU1452 to do that.

Greetings Dave,
Thanks for the reply. Yes I was more or less wanting a SigmaDSP with the capability to configure the ADAU1372. Without using an external MCU, is the ADAU1452 capable of 'self booting' and configuring the ADAU1372?
Moving up to the ADAU1452 would be preferred as it's the latest generation of SigmaDSPs. I do happen to have the EVAL-ADAU1452miniz in my box of DSP boards.
I'm mildly confused about the sigmastudio abstraction and what it is capable of in regards to configuring compatible codecs once its programmed a self booting DSP.
Thanks for your assistance.
*** Edit ***
I discovered the abilities exclusive the ADAU145x 'Master Control Port Boot time I/O' and this has answered the question.
