New system with ADAU1446 and ADAU1372
Hi All,
I am looking for some guidance and confirmation on a proposed new system. I currently have a design that is quite sophisticated in its implementation and requires the utmost in signal fidelity. The core of the system uses an AD1938 along with two ADAU1446 DSPs with one DSP acting as the master. While the system works perfectly, it is VERY costly, and I am working on a slimmed down version where cost savings are the main priority. By reducing the feature set I can get away with one ADAU1446, but the AD1938, as nice as it is, is extremely costly. I need 3 ADCs and a pair of DAC channels, all preferably single-ended to reduce circuit complexity. The ADAU1372 codec seems to fit the bill and is cost effective. Does anyone see any reason that this might not work with the ADAU1446?
Thanks,
ACW

Adding to my question...it looks like I spoke too soon. Unlike the AD1938, it looks as though the ADAU1372 must be interfaced with a system controller...it does not look like there is any way to run it stand alone and I do not have a uC on board. Oh well, any other suggestions for an inexpensive codec with 3 or more ADCs, and two or more DACs?
Thanks,
ACW
ADAU1772 has many of the same functions as -1372, and is capable of self-booting.
Hello Andrew,
I agree with Jon, The ADAU1772 would be a good choice for the codec part of this design. The built in DSP can be used for some initial preprocessing before sending it to the ADAU1446. You also could just shut it down and not use it at all.
As another possible cost saving measure you may be able to use one of our other SigmaDSP products. The ADAU1761, or the ADAU1401A comes to mind, where the DSP may be powerful enough to run your stripped down application. Then you can either use two of these parts to obtain the three channels you require or use the ADAU1772 as a codec and use only the DSP portion of the 1761 or the 1401A. This all depends on the complexity of your application.
Thanks,
Dave T
